Alder Buckthorn Bark (lat.Frangula Alnus) is one of the most widely used natural laxatives. It is used as a mild laxative, stimulating the peristalsis of the large intestine. Due to its choleretic effect, it is recommended in diseases of the liver and gall bladder.

Dosage and how to use

Decoction:

Pour 1 teaspoon of crushed bark with a glass of water and heat, covered, slowly to boil for 15 minutes. Drain. Drink cup in the evening as a laxative.

 

Side effects

Due to the strong side effects of buckthorn bark, it should not be used for too long. Chronic consumption of this raw material may lead to excessive congestion of the large intestine, especially the colon, and consequently to the formation of hemorrhoids.

Long-term use of laxatives increases the body's tolerance to them, even causing the opposite effect.

The body gets used to the use of the preparation, which is associated with the need to take ever larger doses of the raw material and poisoning the body. When using alder buckthorn bark, abdominal cramps and pain may also appear, as well as red-brown urine.

Contraindications 

Alder Buckthorn bark should not be given to children or pregnant women.

Due to its serious side effects, this measure is not recommended for the treatment of constipation in children. In the case of pregnant women, the alder buckthorn bark promotes pelvic congestion, which has an adverse effect on the maintenance of pregnancy.

Alder Buckthorn bark interacts with diuretics and steroids to increase the excretion of potassium from the body, resulting in hypokalemia and arrhythmias. Chronic use in combination with cardiac drugs enhances their effect. The raw material should also not be used by patients suffering from:

  • gastrointestinal obstruction,
  • ulcerative colitis,
