Elderberry Fruit ( lat. Sambucus Nigra) is an undemanding plant that can grow almost anywhere. During the flowering period in June, it is covered with small white flowers gathered in large umbels. In late summer (late August and early September) dark purple, shiny fruits appear on it. Elderberry has long been known for its remarkable healing properties.
Dried fruit can be a quick and healthy snack at work or on the go, or an addition to cereals, desserts, cakes and porridge.
Brew:
Pour hot water over the fruit and let it brew, covered, for about 10 minutes. (Use a teaspoon of dried fruit per glass).
Fresh flowers and unripe black fruit contain a harmful substance - sambunigrin, which can cause poisoning (manifested by nausea and vomiting). To minimize the risk of poisoning, eat dried or heat-treated elderberry fruit.
Elderberry is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, and for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Although no side effects have been reported in these groups, there is insufficient data to confirm that it is safe.
Some people are allergic to elderberry and may experience common symptoms after eating it, such as runny nose, itchy or red eyes, and difficulty breathing. However, elderberry allergies affect only 0.6% of the general population, according to studies conducted on more than 3,500 randomly tested people.
The main contraindication to the use of elderberry is eating raw, untreated fruit.
