Alfalfa herb (lat. Medicago sativa) which comes from Arabic and means "the best forage" (al'ealaf al'afdal). It is a plant older than the oldest historical sources. It comes from South-West Asia, but is now grown widely all over the world. Alfalfa is one of the plants richest in bioactive ingredients, because it contains over 300 of them. It is of great importance in Ayurvedic medicine and folk medicine in many communities. It comes from pre-recorded history in ancient Persia, an area of southwest Asia. Traces of it from the beginning of the 8th century AD were found in Spain. Alfalfa was brought to England in 1650, to Russia in 1800, and to the Americas along with the colonizers.
Infusion
Pour 2-3 tablespoons (5-10g) of dried and grounded herb with a cup of boiling water and leave it to brew for 10-15 minutes. Drain. Drink 2-3 times a day to strengthen the body and lower cholesterol. It is recommended to use the infusion in anemia, diseases of blood vessels, atherosclerosis and in the initial stages of diabetes. In addition, in states of morbid emaciation, as well as fatigue, exhaustion and excessive nervousness.
Tincture
Put 100g of dried and grounded alfalfa herb in a jar and pour 500ml of 40% pure vodka. Close the jar tightly and place it in a warm and shaded room for 2-3 weeks. After this time, squeeze the herb mass and strain the macerate through gauze or filter paper. Pour the tincture into a dark bottle and label it. Keep the tincture in the refrigerator.
Long-term alfalfa supplementation can cause:
The ingredients of alfalfa may show estrogenic activity. For this reason, alfalfa should not be consumed by pregnant and lactating women. Food doses (e.g. alfalfa sprouts in a salad) are considered harmless. Alfalfa should be avoided by all people whose health deteriorates as a result of exposure to estrogen.
Alfalfa potentially increases the activity of the immune system and enhances immune processes. For this reason, it is contraindicated for people with autoimmune diseases:
Specialists first of all warn against combining alfalfa with warfarin - a drug that reduces blood clotting. Alfalfa, due to the high concentration of vitamin K, increases blood clotting, thus interfering with the action of warfarin.
One has to be careful when combining alfalfa supplements with birth control pills. The phytoestrogens in alfalfa can interfere with the action of the tablets and make them less effective.
Supplementation with alfalfa preparations is also not recommended when taking immunosuppressants (drugs that reduce the activity of the immune system), as the bioactive ingredients of alfalfa stimulate the immune system to function. Alfalfa is therefore an antagonist of immunosuppressants.
